Toyota with industry leaders to form the Automotive Edge Computing Consortium

Toyota announced on the 10^th of August that it has joined forces with several industry leaders in order to start the formation of the Automotive Edge Computing Consortium. The member organizations included in this consortium are the Denso Corporation, Intel Corporation, Ericsson, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), NTT DOCOMO, INC., Toyota InfoTechnology Center Co., Ltd. and Toyota Motor Corporation.

Toyota stated that the objective of the consortium is developing an ecosystem for connected cars in order to support emerging services. These services include intelligent driving, driving assistance based on cloud computing and the creation of maps with real time data.

In Toyota they predict that the data flow between modern vehicles and the cloud will reach 10 exabytes per month by the year 2025. This is nearly 10,000 times larger than the present volume. The necessity for new network architecture and cloud computing infrastructure will be triggered by this expected growth. Toyota also states that the consortium will focus on improving network capacity, accommodating automotive big data in reasonable fashion between vehicles and the cloud by means of border or edge computing and more effective network design. The consortium will boost the development of best practices for the distributed and layered approach in computing, approved by its members.

In the coming month, the aforementioned members will start their activities by inviting relevant leaders in global technology to expand the consortium.
