Toyota Provides $1 Million Grant to Improve Future STEM Scholars in Georgetown College

Georgetown College, the educational institution in Georgetown, accepted the latest grant from Toyota Motor North America on May 6th, 2016. This grant is for the future scholars, their education programs and for those who are preparing for careers in the field of science, engineering, technology and math (STEM). It is also for those who will teach in a STEM-focused field. Toyota continues to invest in the people as well in the institutions.

Over the last 30 years, Toyota has been in partnership with this College in Georgetown on other scholarship initiatives, giving more than $1.5 million before the $1 million grant. The college neighbors Toyota’s largest manufacturing plant, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc (TMMK).

Toyota’s Georgetown plant supports over $171,000 per year in direct scholarships to students in Kentucky attending colleges across the state.

Will James, president of TMMK, said that they in Toyota believe that investing in education is an investment for the future, for the company, and not only the company, but for the community as well.

This investment and partnership with Georgetown College to advance STEM opportunities won’t have the impact only on making cars and how they are made but also on shaping the future of mobility for all our society.

There are now around 8,000 full time employees in Toyota Kentucky, which makes it one of the largest. The plan is that the plant in Georgetown becomes the home for Toyota’s 600 engineers.

During 2016-2017, this college will have 350 students pursuing degrees in the STEM field. Toyota’s grant of $6 million will be awarded in direct aid in scholarship funding.

The school’s President Dr. M. Dwaine Greene said “I am thrilled that, with keen insight, Toyota has seen in Georgetown College not only an institution with an excellent reputation in the liberal arts, but an institution which also does superb work in the sciences and other STEM fields. We are grateful to Toyota for being part of the vision and future of Georgetown College.”
