Toyota Plans to Offer 10 Purely Electric Vehicles by 2020s

Toyota has plans to offer more than 10 purely electric vehicle models in its lineup by the early 2020s. Toyota Motor Corporation has no purely electric vehicles in offer now but offers hybrid models which have both a gas and electric motor.

The very first kind of these EVs will primarily be offered in China, as said by Executive Vice President Shigeki Terashi, on Monday 18^th of December. China is a nation that encourages these kinds of electric vehicles with subsidies and other policies and expects this type of technology to have massive growth. As for future plans, according to Terashi, Toyota’s EVs will appear and be offered in India, Japan, the U.S. and Europe.

The company states that by 2025, every model it sells will have some sort of “electrified” version.

In addition, Toyota announced its collaboration of its auto battery business with Panasonic Corporation, the Japanese electronics maker. Terashi emphasizes the importance of the Panasonic deal, calling it “a crucial piece” of the Toyota strategy because it promotes Japanese partnership.

Progress and further development in battery technology are vital for the success of EVs. A great shift toward their use would require more use and recycling of the expensive and rare materials that are used in batteries, like lithium.

Toyota has announced another goal on green vehicles- it aims to sell 5.5 million electrified vehicles a year by about 2030. Toyota sells around 10 million vehicles per year globally. The company stated that it will invest $13 billion to realize this goal. More than half of this will go on making batteries.

Other automakers like Volkswagen AG, Honda Motor Co., and Nissan Motor Co., offer or are working on electric vehicles.  Taking this into consideration, the competition between battery makers is heating up.

Toyota has generally tried to develop essential technologies in – house, and not purchase them from outsiders. This involves knowhow for robotics and computer chips.
