New model from Toyota: Prius Plug-in Hybrid has Solar Panels on the Roof
In June, Toyota revealed its new model of Prius. It has the option for a solar panel roof. This roof will stretch along almost the entire length of the roof. With this option vehicles can double the miles up to 37 from 16.4 miles on a single charge. Toyota is moving forward and in right direction counting on the fact that the buyers want a hybrid experience.
The idea is that you power your electric vehicle from direct sunlight. The system is capable to power the air-conditioning with no battery power.
It will first appear in Japan as it is home base for Toyota and where the new Prius plug-in hybrid proposal is possible. Still, it won’t appear in the U.S. yet, due to their safety regulations. There are plans to bring it to America, but still there is some work to do on solving the issues of the rooftop glass in case of crash.
It is arranged that Prius Prime arrives on the U.S. market by the end of the year.
This version in the U.S., called Prius Prime, was shown first in March at New York Auto Show with a whole new exterior design. During the Show, the company said that Prius Prime would cost $30,000 after federal tax credits, but not including solar panel roofing.
In Japan, the company said that international version called the Prius PHV will appear with a battery effectiveness increased by 10 percent and with a new solar panel. This option offers charging the car battery in the sun while parked. Theoretically, your Prius Prime is charging at the airport parking lot while you’re on a 10 day trip. This will have capability to power lights, air conditioning and automatic windows.
This wasn’t the first challenge where this kind of technology was implemented in a car, but it is first time to be done on a commercial vehicle.
