Linux – Based Infotainment System on the dashboard of the next Toyota Camry

Toyota announced that the next-generation 2018 Camry will be the first car available in the U.S. market that will include an Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) based infotainment system. Toyota is giving more options for the drivers to be entertained and engaged as cars are more connected. Keiji Yamamoto, head of Toyota’s Connected Company, said: “The flexibility of the AGL platform allows us to quickly roll out Toyota’s infotainment system across our vehicle line-up, providing customers with greater connectivity and new functionalities at a pace that is more consistent with consumer technology.”

AGL as an open source platform based on the Linux OS, will be the backbone of Toyota’s own Entune 3.0 system.

This AGL powered infotainment systems will appear in the North American Camry area. They will be on sale during the third quarter of 2017. Toyota vehicles from the luxury Lexus brand will also offer the new platform by the end of the summer.

AGL is one open source project hosted by Linux Foundation. The group consists of 100 members, automakers, tech corporations and suppliers. AGL was built from the ground up by hundreds of engineers who worked to build an open source system. This open source platform means that even more apps and features will be available from developers who have access to its SDK. This can bring Android auto and Apple CarPlay directly to the Camry’s dash. Android Auto and CarPlay have become popular because they use the same common interfaces users know from their smartphones.
